Places and history

Welcome to Montereale, the ‘gateway to Valcellina’. Between the plain and the mountains, the town stands on an alluvial terrace and connects the unique steppe environment of the Magredi to the Friulian Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Landscape and archaeology meet in the setting of the Malnisio hydroelectric power station, which brought light to Venice in the early 20th century.

The story of the territory unfolds in the rooms of the Archaeological Museum in Palazzo Toffoli, in Dominu Park and at the remains of the Castle on the Hill, amid history and nature. A visit to the Church of San Rocco, with its Renaissance frescoes painted by Giovanni Maria Zaffoni, known as “Calderari”, is a journey into another dimension.

It takes us back to the time when the miller Domenico Scandella, known as “Menocchio“, lived here. His mill must have been right near the church, just after the Ravedis narrows, where the Cellina emerges from the gorge and sinks into the gravel.

Today Montereale Valcellina has four hamlets, with 4311 inhabitants. Besides the main centre, which gives its name to the municipality, there are Grizzo, Malnisio and San Leonardo. Rising from 170 to 1641 metres above sea level, the territory presents a great variety of environments, with many botanical and animal species.
